CES – the annual Las Vegas tech show where the world converges once a year to showcase its gadgetry innovations has kicked off with various companies announcing the lineup for 2018. Elgato, makers of accessories for the Mac and Connected Home devices have announced a Mini version of its popular charger – the Thunderbolt 3.
We take a look at the features of the Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock, its availability and pricing details.
Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock
The Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock is a small yet powerful device. It comes with fewer ports – just an HD-supported DisplayPort, HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB-A port. It connects to the MacBook and the MacBook Pro using a single Thunderbolt 3/USB-C cable. The cable fits neatly into the mini dock when not in use, making it super convenient to carry on the go.

The current variant – the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is not only expensive at the $300 price point, it is also not easily portable. Plus, it caters mostly to people who use multiple displays and require plenty of extra ports for daily use.
On the other hand, the Mini is more suited for the average computer user who wants a little more flexibility than what the MacBook Pro offers. The Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock also does not need a separate power source. It can be directly connected to the MacBook Pro. Elgato states that the Mini eliminates the need for using four separate adapters while still ensuring full performance and power delivery.
The Mini produces up to 4K video output, high bandwidth data signals, and the most current USB-transfer support.
Elgato hasn’t announced a price tag yet or an official launch date, but it is expected to hit stores in the spring of 2018. We will update this post as soon as the information becomes available.
