How to Take a Mac Screenshot - MMFI

We show you quick ways to take a screenshot on a Mac!

Windows PCs have the intuitive Snipping tool that lets you quickly capture screenshots of your work. But, if you have a Mac and want to share something cool that you have on your screen, you can do it just as effortlessly, without having to buy some expensive application. Here are the different ways in which you can take a screenshot on a Mac.

How to Take a Screenshot on a Mac – Fullscreen

1. Make sure you have everything you want to capture open on the Mac screen.

2. Press the keyboard shortcut of Command + Shift + 3

3. A camera click sound is heard and a full screenshot of the window will be displayed on your desktop in the PNG format. Mac will title your screenshot with the date and time as well.

Double click the screenshot to open it and share it with your contacts. You can also right-click and open it with another application or drag and drop it to share with another app.

How to Screenshot Only a Part of the Screen

1. Again, make sure you have the window set up exactly how you want it captured.

2. Press the keyboard shortcut of Command + Shift + 4

3. Your mouse pointer will now turn into a crosshair pointer. Place the pointer in the corner of the area you want to capture. Then click and drag across to the other end of the area you want to capture. You will be able to see a pixel count or size of your screenshot in the corner of the crosshair pointer.

When you have captured the correct area, let go of the mouse or trackpad.

The part of the screen that your dragged across will be captured and displayed as a PNG image. Again, you can double-click to open the image, right-click to open in another application and even drag and drop it to share with another app.

How to Screenshot a Specific App Window

If you want to capture a screenshot of a specific app window, or  take a screenshot of a specific dropdown menu, here’s what you need to do:

1. Open the app you want to screenshot.

2. Press the keyboard shortcut of Command + Shift + 4

3. Your mouse pointer will now turn into a crosshair pointer. Press the Spacebar. Your cursor will turn into a camera.

4. Place the camera cursor on top of the window you want to screenshot. The window will have a blue tint so you know you’re capturing the correct window.

5. Click to take the screenshot.

The image will be captured in the PNG format as before and you can share it according to your requirements.

How to Save a Screenshot Directly to your Mac Clipboard

If you want to save a screenshot of your Mac directly to your Mac Clipboard, you can do that too!

1. Set up your window to capture the image as you want it.

2. Press Command + Shift + Control + 3 to take a full screenshot, press Command + Shift + Control + 4 to screenshot an area, or press Spacebar afterwards to screenshot a specific window.

3. Go to your image editor or document where you want to insert the image. Hit Control + V or choose Paste from the menu to copy the screenshot from of the Clipboard onto the editor/document.

That’s it! You just learned the different ways to take a screenshot on a Mac. These steps will work on a Mac running OS Sierra, OS X El Capitan, OS X Yosemite. Just remember though, that some apps may not allow the contents of their windows to be screenshot, so you may not be able to capture them.
