I’ve always wanted to learn a new language but most learning apps are just too taxing. Despite the presence of tons of learning language apps on the App Store, the wonderful Duolingo included, I’ve just found it to be extremely challenging to continue my lessons after a period of time.
After finally giving up on learning a new language, I came across Memrise recently. Although the app has been around for over 3 years now, I thought, why not give it another try.
So far, the going’s great.Which brings me to this review.
Here’s a closer look at Memrise, my favorite language learning app for 2017.

Memrise: Learn Languages App Review
To get started with Memrise, you need to sign up. Either via an email address or Facebook.
Once you’re in, the introduction begins with something that looks like it came out of a sci-fi game. A dark force out there wants to overthrow the Alliance and bring uniformity across the galaxy. And the only way to stop that force from succeeding in its evil plan is if you learn a new language.
Now the future of the galaxy rests in your hands. Oh well!
You now have to decide your weapon of choice. Will it be the ever-so-popular French or Spanish, German, Chinese, Italian or one of the 75+ languages available at its disposal. Once you’ve made your choice, the lessons start off straight away.
Thankfully, you won’t be learning apples, oranges, boy, girl and some such silly words. Instead there are more practical things like salutations and casual talk. All of the lessons are audio, video and visual card based and you learn in bite-sized sessions.
My first goal was to learn 5 words a day, and it was a really fun experience that made me like the app instantly. The learning sessions are super short so you don’t feel rushed. You can listen to the audio and learn to pronounce the words correctly or replay the audio and practice some more. The app provides a real world translation and a literal translation in English.
Once you grasp the words or phrases, they are displayed in different formats for easy remembrance. For example, the English translation is displayed and you match it to the language you are learning. Then, there are real people speaking out the words or phrases and you need to select its English translation. There’s a lot of repetition, but its well mashed pattern only reinforces the learning objective.
What’s really interesting about Memrise is that its gamified system of teaching makes the words stay longer in your mind. The app currently offers 4 gaming modes to learn and practice – Speed Review, Listening Skills, Difficult Words, Classic Review.
The app also throws in some cute little Chatbots with whom you can have interesting chats. My time with a chatbot was spent in learning grammar and conjugation and it was super fun.
One of the things that makes learning with Memrise such an enjoyable experience is that the app keeps the learning styles varied and interesting. And of course, earning rewards and reaching goals is just a nice way of cheering you on your mission. Which is safekeeping the galaxy, of course!
Pricing & Download Links
Memrise is free to download but its not a free language learning app. Throughout the lessons, you’ll see pop-ups encouraging you to sign up for a premium subscription service. And if you learn at a really quick pace, the tutors will step back a little, asking you to come back after a specified time to learn more.
Memrise Pro offers plenty of great features that will help you learn and master the language. For instance, you can get native speakers to help in your learning or you can master troublesome words and boost your learning speed with a personalized game mode to hone your reflexes.
Memrise feels more like a language learning app for adults and its a great app to carry with you on the go. And the offline lessons would make for a great time pass when you’re stuck waiting for the bus or you’re way behind in a lengthy grocery queue.
My time spent with Memrise was awesome. I have made good progress in my lessons and totally enjoyed learning. The introduction of native speakers added a real-world touch to learning and I’ve greatly enjoyed my interactions with the chatbots too!
If you have tried learning a new language and failed, you should give Memrise a shot. While the free version is a lot of fun, the Pro version definitely promises value for serious learners.
