If tracking calories or maintaining a food journal is wearing you thin, its time to change tactics. Practice the simple art of mindful eating and track your meals easily with Mindfull Meal Tracker.
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to maintaining a food journal is to keep using it consistently until you achieve your intended goals. With so much going on in our lives, its simply impossible, if not impractical to sit down and take the time to fill in your journal, record what you ate, how much you ate, how much water you consumed, how many calories you burned and so on.

You’d rather be doing something better in the time it takes to enter all these details repeatedly day after day, meal after meal. With any food journal app, there’s a good chance that you’ll eventually stop recording your eating habits.
But a new app from Meal Planner LLC hopes to put all those journaling pains to rest. Mindfull Meal Tracker makes the job of maintaining your food journal super easy. Just snap a picture of the meal you’re about to eat and its automatically recorded in the database.
Unlike other food journal apps, Mindfull Meal tracker doesn’t bother with details like calorie intake, calories burned and all that jazz. What it does is help you stay mindful of what you eat.

Mindful eating is the simple practice of being in the present when you are eating. When you practice mindful eating, you pay attention to how you chew your food and how fast or slow you are eating. You are also aware of the portion you are eating, and whether you are eating to satisfy your emotional craving or physical hunger. Mindful eating habits will help you create a healthier relationship with food.
And Mindfull Meal Tracker, with its unique idea of visually capturing your meals, makes you stay conscious of your eating habits and in turn exercise more restraint when you’re tempted to eat more.
At Home with Mindfull Meal Tracker
Mindfull Meal Tracker is one of the simplest apps I’ve come across on the App Store when it comes to food journals. Once installed, the Home page gets you ready to snap a picture of your meal. It automatically recognizes if its lunch time, dinner time or breakfast time and keeps that slot ready to fill in your photo.
All you need to do is click a picture of what’s on your plate and save the recording. You can complement the photo with some notes of your own too. If you’re eating outside these set hours, the Other section lets you track brunch and other sneaky meal tuck-ins too!
All the photos captured are saved in the Eat Mindfully gallery. You can hop on over to that section to see all the stuff you’ve eaten everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also edit any of the information you’ve captured in the photo and share your meal pics with others.
When you visualize the quantity of food you’ve consumed in a meal or in a day, you become more careful about what and how much food you load on your plate the next time. When you attain that level of consciousness, you automatically start to appreciate what you eat and how you eat.
Setting Your Meal Times and Maintaining Privacy
Mindfull Meal Tracker has a Meal Times feature (inside Settings) that lets you set your meal times. There are pre-set start and end times for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. You can tap the – and + buttons to change them to suit your meal times.
There is also a Reminders feature in Settings that informs you when its meal time. This way, you never miss your food intake routine. This is disabled by default, but activating it is a good idea as it will help you set up a proper routine for your meals. That important presentation can wait!
There’s one more nice feature in Mindfull Meal Tracker that I like. Its called Privacy Lock. It helps keep your food journal private, away from prying eyes. You can set up your own passcode and it also works with Touch ID, if you have it enabled on your phone. For users with the latest iPhones, 3D Touch feature offers a quicker way to get to your camera for meal captures.
I’ve downloaded and used a ton of food journals from Calorie Counter to Food Diary. Most of them work on the principle of you adding foods from their database into the journal. One – they do not consider International meals and most of what I eat are not available in their database. Two – its too much work to keep filling every single piece of food you eat.
With Mindfull Meal Tracker, it doesn’t matter what I eat. A simple click is all is needed to record my journal. The app is therefore such a huge time saver. Plus, I can always go back and edit photos with notes on meals that didn’t make me feel good after eating.
As far as the UI goes, I love its clean look and how everything is just a tap away. When it comes to tracking meals, I like how the reminders help set up an eating routine to discipline yourself and avoid munching during off hours.
Mindfull Meal Tracker is good at what it does, but I’d love to see more features in the app that promotes mindful eating. For one, a mindful meal timer to enjoy the eating experience and ensure I don’t rush with my meals. Adding some techniques that will help transform bad eating habits would also be nice.
Creating a mindful eating routine requires a mental discipline. That discipline can only come from within. However, Mindfull Meal Tracker with its ability to visually remind you of your food intake serves a powerful reminder to help you build that discipline.
The app is available on the App Store for $2.99. That’s probably a tad expensive for an app with not too many features. But, for anyone who is determined to practice mindful eating, this app is definitely worth checking out.
